Nation-state

A nation-state is only on nationality living together. The concept is sovereign state whose citizens or subjects are relatively alike  in factors such as language or common descent. In other words its a state with only one nation in its borders An example for a nation-state is Iceland.

nation-state & a multinational state

multinational state is a sovereign political body that includes more than one group which identifies itself as a "nation" while a "nation-state" is a sovereign power which is limited to theoretically having members strictly of one "nation". An example of a multinational stae is the United States because it has different nationalities living together.

concept of colonies / current distribution

A colony is a group of people who leave their native country to form in a new land a settlement subject to, or connected with, the parent nation. They usually leave thier parent nation to fight for thier independence and rebellion.

Colonies are still found around the world, like the American Somoa, Guam U.S v Virgin Islands, which are colonized by the United States, Anguilla British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Falkland islands, which are colonized by the U.K. Their is still more of coloines around the world, mostly located int the U.K.

Why are Nation-states difficult to create?

Physical boundaries between States

a physical boundary is a naturally occurring divide between two areas. An example of a physical boundary is a mountain. For example, the Pyrenees Mountains, which  separate France and Spain, are a physical boundary.

Cultural Boundaries between states

a cultural boundary is a boundary line that runs along differences in ethnicity, such as language and religion. An example of this is found within the country of Canada, where French is the official language of Quebec.

Gerrymandering

What is gerrymandering ?

Gerrymandering is a form of redistribution in which electoral district or constituency boundaries are deliberately modified for electoral advantage. Gerrymandering may be used to help or hinder particular constituents, such as members of a political, racial, linguistic, religious or class group

Example of gerrymandering

On the right side you see North Carolina, this is a perfect example of gerrymadering. North Carolina's 12th congressional district is located in central North Carolina and comprises portions of Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Lexington, Salisbury, Concord, and High Point. It was one of two minority-majority Congressional districts created in the state in the 1990s. North Carolina earlier had a twelfth seat in the House in the nineteenth century and in the mid-twentieth century

How is it done?

By shaping legislative districts in various ways, officeholders are able to affect which voters they will be responsible to on election day.

Principles alliances in Europe during the Cold Era

An alliance in Europe was NATO.

NATO is a political and military alliance of 28 North American and European countries. They  joined together to best pursue security and defense.

Another alliance in Europe was WARSAW PACT. A military alliance of communist nations in eastern Europe. Organized in 1955 in answer to NATO, the Warsaw Pact included Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union.

Terrorism

Some conceptes that terrorism include are

- The indiscriminate and random killing of persons, especially civilians and non-combatants,

- Assassinations,

- The emphasis on the surprise nature of attacks,

- The quest for shocking the community through media coverage,
- The existence of a self

-proclaimed political agenda or “cause” to justify those attacks.

The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred. The people terrorists kill are not the targets, they are collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or buses is not the goal, those are just tactics. The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act.

State-sponsored terrorism is government support of violent non-state actors engaged in terrorism

The Piazza Fontana Bombing was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in history. A bomb exploded at the headquarters of the National Agrarian Bank some 200m from the Duomo in Milan, Italy. The attack resulted in 17 fatalities with more than 88 wounded. The same afternoon, 3 more bombs were said to be planted in different cities around Italy. 2 of them exploded in Rome and Milan and the 3rd one was retrieved before detonation.

One quote i found very interesting was this one

"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"
