World Climate Regions

Types of climates 

World climates are divided into 5 large regions ; tropical, dry, mid-latitude, high latitude, and highland. The regions are broke apart into smaller subregions.

TROPICAL WET

  • Its always hot, average temperature of 80 f 

  • begins day sunny but afternoon have clouded up 

  • rain falls almost daily 

  • found in Central and South America 

 

 

TROPICAL WET AND DRY

 

  •  subregion has a rainy season in summer and a dry season in winter. 

  •  temperatures are cooler in the dry season 

  • warmer in the wet 

  • found  in Africa, South, and Central America and some parts of Asia 

HIGHLANDS

  • climate varies with latitude, elevation, other topography, and continental location

  • in rugged mountain areas ; climates can vary based on such factors as whether a slope faces north or south 

  • climates help you understand about the general weather conditons 

MEDITERRANEAN

  • climate subregion is named for the land around the Mediterranean Sea where it is located 

  • includes the United States and parts of Australia

  • summers are dry and hot ; winters are cool and rainy 

HUMID SUBTROPICAL

  • long period of summer heat and muidity characterize the humid subtropics

  • found on the east coast of continents 

  • often subject to hurricanes in late summer and autum 

  • winters are mild to cool 

  • climate sutible for crops

HUMID CONTINENTAL

  • great variety in temperature & precipitation characterizes this climate

  • found mid-latitude interiors of Northern Hemisphere continents 

  • humid continental climate 

  • air masses chilled by Artic ice and snow flow south over these areas

  • frequentily collide with tropical air masses, causin changing weather conditions
